Mini Grant

In support of campus activities that would promote and enrich cultural diversity at The University of Montana, the Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) invites UM student groups to submit proposals for funding consideration. Several grants, up to $1,000 each, are awarded annually. Only group members (students) may author proposals. Each proposal must identify the group's contact person who must be a student.

The DAC will use the following criteria to evaluate each proposal:

  1. The impact the activities would have on promoting and enriching cultural diversity on campus (25 POINTS)
  2. The breadth of the campus that will be impacted (20 POINTS)
  3. Evidence that the request will be co-sponsored by another funding source (10 POINTS)
  4. Evidence that two or more student constituencies are involved in the event (5 POINTS)

Typically, more proposals are submitted than can be funded. The Diversity Advisory Council determines which proposals will be funded.

Proposals are due spring semester of each academic year. Contact Mary Groom-Hall at hallmg@mso.umt.edu or Lommasson Center 284 (inside University College) for precise deadline information. Submit proposals to Mary Groom-Hall via email attachment or to her office.

Recent examples of successful proposals include:

  • Partial funding of a guest lecture hosted by La Gente Unida
  • Partial funding of a Native American Law Student Association film festival, alumni reception and youth conference
  • Partial funding of the International Culture and Food Festival sponsored by the International Student Association and Foreign Student and Scholar Services
  • Partial funding of the Kyi-Yo Powwow sponsored by the Kyi-Yo Native American Student Association
  • Partial funding of a Middle East Peace Panel sponsored by the Model Arab League (Northern Rockies)

Recent examples of unfunded proposals:

  • Those that were incomplete
  • Those that were submitted after the deadline
  • Those that provided little or no evidence of efforts to secure funding in addition to that requested from the DAC
  • Those whose intended audiences were either limited in scope or did not comprise the campus community
  • Those that requested honoraria for UM employees
